“Just Try and Trick this Kitty”
During a visit to Big Lots, I found a cat toy. Kitty never has enough toys, so I considered it essential to buy just one more. I happened upon a life-sized bird that sang a cute little birdie song when it was squeezed. “Great,” I thought. “Kitty will love this.
I smiled as I thought about her playing with it. I felt I had one up on her with this real looking fake bird. I anticipated the fun she would have figuring it all out. She will never guess the truth.
Later that day

Dave, my husband, presented the bird to Kitty. She paused, examined it, and then just turned and walked away. Not even worthy of a sniff. Another discarded toy for the box.
An hour later, Kitty came running inside through the pet door. Mouth full of feathers, she avoided us by taking the long route around the kitchen island. She sneaked under the dinning room table, slinked passed the fireplace and hid behind the couch under the window.
She reached up with her paws and pushed the shutters open and released her prey. A terrified bird flew out of her mouth and raced for the window only to find itself trapped. Battling to fly upwards towards the roof beams, while avoiding the menace of an active ceiling fan, the bird struggled to escape.

The pursuit
Kitty chased from the ground jumping and snagging the bird when it flew low. Catch and release was the name of the game. Feathers flying as Kitty dribbled the bird-ball across the room. If only Nike had little kitty sneakers, she would be NBA material for sure.
Dave pursued after Kitty which gave added dimension to the fun. One-on-one for possession of the bird-ball. Pulling the bird into her lair under the recliner chair, Kitty waited for Dave to make his next move.
Prying open the chair’s footrest, he rustled the frightened sparrow out of Kitty’s mouth, then cradled it in his hands and carried it outside placing it on the low garden wall. Bewildered and greatly shaken the bird rested on the fence and soon flew away.
Kitty observed from the window the bird’s exit, and then with a spring in her step moseyed back towards the pet door. Paws with extended claws tiptoed across the hardwood floor making a slight click along the way. Tail straight up in the air with the appearance of ever so slight a smile on her face. Strolling by me, I swear I heard her say, “Now that’s a bird.”

Life Lesson
It’s better with cats to always deal with the truth. Only humans will tolerate a lie.
